What do you get when you contain a group of strangers in a conference room on a Sunday afternoon?
An alien cyborg who comes to Earth to collect dandelions she will need to save her royal parents were are being held for ransom by a drug cartel.
Welcome to “How to Build a Superheroine,” a workshop I particpated in with the talented Eilis Flynn and Gail Simone at this year’s Geek Girl Con.
The Con was created to celebrate the female geek. Whether you were into comics and role playing games, or computers and science, fans of Firefly were welcomed to stand next to those of Dr. Who and Games of Thrones.
GGC12 was by no means a “down with men” event, but a forum for women with like-minded interest to come together in the sisterhood of geekness. The message that I was struck most with was that as a society, we not only have to create the opportunities for women in the fields of science and technology, but also encourage them to explore their interests in these studies, especially our children.
Thanks go to the staff of Geek Girl Con for putting on a fantastic show, and I look forward to attending next year.
